Ok friends … Pull up a chair โ Make some coffee … Because today we’re geeking out. Like PROPERLY geeking out. ๐ค
We’re talking tempo training
… and specifically why deliberately playing with the SPEED of your client’s movement is one of the most powerful and criminally underused tools in your entire coaching toolkit.
This is a concept. A training philosophy. A whole new way of thinking about movement that once your clients understand it โ changes everything. Forever.
Ready? Let’s go deep. ๐ฅ
First โ Let’s Talk About What’s Actually Happening in a Rep
Every single resistance movement your clients do has two primary phases. And most people blow through both of them without a second thought.
The Eccentric Phase โ this is the lengthening phase. The lowering. The part where gravity is doing most of the work IF you let it. The down of a squat. The lowering of a push-up. The descent of a bicep curl.
Here’s what most people don’t know โ the eccentric phase is where the MOST muscle damage happens. And muscle damage โ the good kind โ is one of the primary drivers of muscle growth and strength gains. When you slow down the eccentric phase, you dramatically increase the stimulus your muscles receive. More stimulus. Same rep. No extra sets needed. ๐คฏ
The Concentric Phase โ this is the shortening phase. The lifting. The expression of power. The up of a squat. The push of a push-up. The curl of a bicep curl.
The concentric phase is where POWER lives. Where fast twitch muscle fibers get recruited. Where explosive strength gets built and expressed.
Now here’s where tempo training becomes a game changer โ tempo controls how much time and intention your clients spend in EACH of these phases. Slow the eccentric down and you dramatically increase muscle damage and growth stimulus. Speed up the concentric and you build explosive power. Pause between phases and you eliminate momentum entirely โ forcing pure muscle strength to do the work.
Same movement. Completely different training effect. Depending entirely on the tempo. ๐ก
Now Let’s Talk Muscle Fibers
Stay with me because this is where it gets even MORE interesting!!
Your muscles are made up of two primary types of fibers:
Slow twitch muscle fibers (Type 1) โ endurance fibers. Fatigue resistant. They love sustained effort, controlled movement, and time under tension. They respond to slow tempos, holds, and pulses. They’re the fibers that build that lean, toned, enduring strength your clients are chasing.
Fast twitch muscle fibers (Type 2) โ power fibers. They generate force fast, fatigue quicker, and respond to explosive, powerful, speedy movement. They’re the fibers behind strength, power, and that athletic snap in movement.
Here’s the thing โ a workout at one consistent speed is really only fully recruiting ONE of these fiber types at a time.
Which means most of your clients are leaving an enormous amount of results on the table. Every. Single. Session. ๐ฎ
Tempo training fixes that. When you deliberately vary the speed โ slow and controlled one session, explosive the next, pulse focused the next โ you ensure that over time EVERY fiber gets challenged. EVERY adaptation gets triggered. And results keep coming because the body never fully adapts to what’s coming next.
The Four Tempo Tools โ And What Each One Does
Think of these not as steps in a sequence โ but as tools in your coaching toolkit. Each one creates a completely different training effect. Each one can be used independently, combined, or rotated across sessions to keep the body constantly guessing. ๐
โฑ๏ธ SLOW AND CONTROLLED โ The Foundation Builder
This is deliberate, intentional movement. A slow eccentric phase โ maybe 3 or 4 counts down โ followed by a controlled concentric return.
What it’s doing in the body:
- Dramatically increasing time under tension โ more seconds under load = more muscle stimulus per rep
- Maximising the eccentric phase โ where the most muscle growth stimulus lives
- Building the mind-muscle connection โ slowing down forces clients to actually FEEL what’s working
- Recruiting slow twitch fibers fully and deeply
- Fixing form โ you simply cannot rush and fake good technique at this tempo
This is the tempo that builds awareness, fixes movement patterns, and creates the foundation everything else is built on. It looks easy. It absolutely is not.
๐ฅ PULSE โ The Burn is Literally the Point
Short, sharp, partial range of motion reps that keep the muscle under constant load without ever fully releasing the tension.
What it’s doing in the body:
- Eliminating the rest phase entirely โ the muscle never gets a break, tension is constant
- Targeting the mid-range of the movement โ often the weakest and most undertrained portion
- Creating massive metabolic stress โ that burn is lactic acid building, which is a powerful trigger for muscle adaptation and growth
- Recruiting additional motor units as fatigue builds โ the body calls in MORE fibers to help
That burning sensation your clients feel during pulses? That’s not just discomfort. That’s adaptation happening in real time. Tell them to lean into it โ because that burn is literally the point.
๐งฑ HOLD โ Where Mental and Physical Strength Collide
Isometric training. A static contraction held at the most challenging point in the movement. Squat hold at parallel. Push-up hold at the bottom. No moving. Just holding. And breathing. And trusting.
What it’s doing in the body:
- Building isometric strength โ the ability to generate and maintain force without movement
- Recruiting slow AND fast twitch fibers simultaneously โ isometric holds are unique in calling on both fiber types together
- Improving joint stability โ holding under load strengthens connective tissue in a way dynamic movement simply can’t replicate
- Building serious mental toughness โ the hold is where clients find out what they’re made of
The hold is the tempo that builds character. Clients dread it. They feel incredible after it. And it’s doing things in the body that no other tempo can.
โก SPEED POWER โ Unleashing the Fast Twitch
Explosive. Fast. Intentional power expressed through the concentric phase with full force and speed.
What it’s doing in the body:
- Fully and specifically recruiting fast twitch Type 2 muscle fibers โ explosive movement is their PRIMARY stimulus
- Training the neuromuscular system โ speed work improves the communication between brain and muscle, enhancing coordination, reaction time and athletic performance
- Creating the afterburn effect โ explosive training elevates metabolism post-workout significantly
- Expressing power โ translating all the strength built through other tempos into fast, functional movement
Speed power is the tempo that makes clients feel ATHLETIC. Strong. Capable. Like everything they’ve been working on just clicked into place. โก
The Real Magic โ Keeping the Body Guessing
Here’s the training principle that ties all of this together โ and it’s the heart of everything we do at WhiteLabelWorkouts.com this month:
The body adapts to predictable stress. So unpredictable stress = constant adaptation = constant results.
When your clients know exactly what’s coming โ same tempo, same speed, same feel every session โ their body gets efficient. It stops being challenged. It stops changing.
But when they don’t know what’s coming? When one session is slow and controlled, the next is explosive, the next is all pulses and holds? The body has to stay ready for EVERYTHING. Every fiber stays recruited. Every adaptation keeps happening. Every session feels genuinely different โ because it IS different.
This is why Tempo Sculpt works the way it does. Each session across the 4 weeks uses tempo deliberately and differently โ so the body never fully settles, never fully adapts, and never stops progressing. The results your clients feel aren’t just from working hard. They’re from working SMART.
The Coaching Gold in All of This
Here’s where I want to speak to you as a business owner for a second.
Tempo training is one of the easiest concepts to TEACH because your clients feel it immediately. You don’t have to explain muscle fiber recruitment to them. You don’t have to show them a diagram. You don’t have to say the word eccentric.
You just have to say “this round we’re pulsing โ short sharp reps, don’t release the tension” โ and within 30 seconds they FEEL the difference.
That immediate feedback is coaching gold. It builds trust. It builds results. And it builds clients who come back because they know you know your stuff. ๐
And from a content perspective? This concept SELLS โ not because it’s trendy, but because it WORKS and people feel it working immediately. That’s the kind of content that gets shared, talked about, and remembered.
